The Mold & Mildew Problem
Molds, a ubiquitous biological hazard, pose a constant health and safety risk to people in both public buildings and private residences. The EPA states that exposure to molds cause allergic reactions, nasal congestion, asthma, and other respiratory aliments. Exposure to molds is also linked to sick building syndrome. Colorado State University Environmental Health Services states that the economic impact of Stachybotrys and other indoor mold remediation is expected to exceed $100 million this year in the United States alone.
THE BLEACH STORY
Bleach is the standard tool for mold mitigation. Bleach is excellent at removing the visible signs of mold, it will kill the vegetative mold plant and it will ‘bleach out’ the color so it appears that the mold is gone but that is NOT true. Bleach alone WILL NOT solve the mold problem because bleach DOES NOT kill the mold spore.

Molds produce tiny spores to reproduce. Spores are the microscopic seeds that molds grow from. Mold spores (seeds) are mobile, long-lasting and hard to kill. If you do not kill the spores, the mold will return as long as the growing conditions are favorable. In addition, these spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually and are carried on humans and pets. This allows molds to easily spread throughout the building. The more growing mold that is present, the more spores are produced and the potential for additional mold growth increases. If the spore is not killed the mold problem will continue no matter how much of the growing mold is killed.
Quick Cleanse & Quantum
Global Specialty Chemical’s family of EPA registered mold mitigation products will kill the vegetative plant and they will penetrate the tough polysaccharide coating of the spore and kill it also. SAFETY
The mold mitigation problem involves three major groups whose safety must be insured. The worker, the inhabitant, and the environment.
The worker who applies the chemical needs to be protected in the short term but will be exposed to the chemical repeatedly in potentially high concentrations. The more dangerous the chemical is the more protective equipment the worker must use which poses a greater risk to them and lowers productivity. Quantum and Quick Cleanse contain no harsh chemicals which minimizes the risk to workers and requires minimal protective equipment during handling and application.
The inhabitant will be living in the building long after the mitigation is complete and their long-term health and safety must be insured. Often times the inhabitants include high-risk individuals including young children and older people. By last estimate 50% of all American homes have been or are being invaded by toxic mold. Toxic mold is the single most infectious agent affecting poor indoor air quality in America today. Black or toxic mold has caused over a billion dollars in insurance claims for each of the last five years.
Many Americans don’t even know that the building material themselves are a large culprit in the spread of toxic mold. When a tree is cut down for building materials mold naturally grows on the dead tree to help it decompose. However , because the tree is never properly treated after it is cut into lumber, the tree continues to grow mold. The lumber is then built into our homes, where the mold finds an environment (dark ,warm and moist climates) which are highly conducive for growth.
Mold can be also grown by an in house water or moisture source. The source can be as simple as leaky pipe, a slow drip in your roof , or improperly ventilated bathroom. Any warm moist environment can incubate mold spore growth. As many as one million spores can grow in a one inch patch of mold. Any wind or air source, any improper wiping in a mold infested area can cause these millions of spores to move to other areas in your house.
Mold can be transferred into your home without you even being aware. i.e. If your neighbors house had been infected by mold, and the person who did the repairs (remediation) on your neighbors home did it improperly, your home could be infected by the millions of spores released by the improper repair.
Traditional methods of removing mold have been less than effective and extremely costly. Routinely, bleach is used to kill the mold. The first thing that must be done in a home infected by mold is identify and eliminate the moisture source. Many times the moisture source is intrinsic to the home itself. It may be a leaky pipe or just lack of proper shower ventilation to allow the moisture to escape. Once the moisture source is identified it can be eliminated by making the repair or adjustment. If the repair is a major ordeal, i.e. (tearing out walls or cabinets) you may want to apply Quantum to the mold infestation to prevent further contamination.
